Heather Ruthig has been creating innovative artworks ranging from photography, painting and sculpture for 25 years.
During that time she was also retained by the Stratford Festival as a props builder where she has crafted elaborate masks, sculpture and set elements that help bring to life the visual majesty this world renowned repertory theatre is famous for. A graduate of the University of Guelph fine art program, Heather is inspired by nature and the beauty within it. She revels in the purest form of a plant creating her sculptures with fine detail. She strives to recognize the magic and power inherent in plants and is inspired by the stories they tell throughout history. Over the past three years Heather has shifted her practice into Ceramics which is a natural evolution to her work. I am fascinated by the history of flowers and plants and the meetings that people have given them along the way. The Doctrine of Signatures and the Victorian language of flowers along with magical meanings of plants have all informed the symbolism used within this tarot deck. The cards that I have chosen for this exhibition are the major arcana cards. These cards symbolize major life events and lessons. The minor arcana cards represent day to day and short term events. They are arranged by 4 suits, pentacles, swords, cups and wands. I’m looking forward to completing the full deck of 78 cards with the final completed version being printed on paper as a proper tarot deck. |
