HEATHER MILLARD
40 something maker of art in many forms and media, living in Stratford. I make because the act brings me peace. I do a lot of dark themes with skulls and I'm often told my art will never sell. I don't paint to sell, I paint because I must. This makes me the starving type of artist, haha. I describe myself as "crazy, but if I were richer I'd merely be eccentric". Most of the works I've submitted hang in my house, in which I have a room of oddities and curiosities.
At a documentary screening in 2014 I had the chance to meet Istvan Cantor aka Monty Cantsin, a long source of inspiration for me. He was banned from art galleries for his actions, later he became so prolific with art that he was celebrated in the same galleries. That evening I met him another artist told me my art would never sell as I had been using all reclaimed and recycled materials. Istvan overheard this and came closer, he heard me tell the other artist I didn't make art to sell, I make art because I have to. Istvan was very pleased to hear me say this and he pretty much told the other guy to leave me alone, it was thrilling, validating and invaluable for me. At times when I am blocked or not making, I remember Istvan and I get back to making. |
